    HIST 111-95-094
    World Civilization I
This course will introduce the student to history from a global perspective. It focuses on the ambiguous evolution of the world, emphasizing that this process has led not only to new technologies, freedoms, and economic opportunities but also to new forms of destruction, oppression, and exploitation. In addition to providing students with a preliminary examination of historical events from the earliest settlements to about 1500, this course will challenge them to think critically about the significance of these past events and how they reflect on the modern world.

    HIST 112-02-094
    World Civilization II

This course will promote understanding of different cultures as they have developed in global, political, social, cultural, economic, and environmental contexts. It will provide the opportunity for students to study historical development of local and regional societies, and to cross disciplinary and geographical boundaries to appreciate an increasingly interdependent and multi-cultural world. This pedagogical approach will emphasize the interconnectedness and uniqueness of all peoples. It will elucidate the contributions of culturally diverse groups to the formation of the modern world, while highlighting their achievements. The course's potential is exemplary for instilling the skills and values of world citizenship and for relating to people different from oneself.

    HIST 420-01-094
    The Holocaust

This course will confront the background, events, and consequences of the extermination of European Jews during World War II. Students will be introduced to traditions of European racism and anti-Semitism, as well as the cultural, political, diplomatic, and social conditions in Germany and elsewhere that helped to make the Holocaust possible. We will then turn to a study of the rise of National Socialism, its vision for a new Europe, and the role of anti-Semitism in Nazi ideology and practice, culminating in an analysis of both the politics and the machinery of genocide. Finally, we will address issues of resistance, aid to the victims and, ultimately, the ways in which our culture and others remember, commemorate, or even forget the Holocaust.
